Spotted Congo Puffer
The Spotted Congo Puffer (Tetraodon schoutedeni) is one of the most visually striking and personality-packed freshwater puffers available in the hobby. Native to the Congo River Basin, this species features a beautiful golden-yellow body adorned with bold black spots — a pattern as unique as a fingerprint on each individual fish.
Unlike many puffers, the Spotted Congo is considered one of the more peaceful species and can sometimes be kept in a community setting with robust, fast-moving tankmates. Each fish has its own distinct personality and will quickly learn to recognize its keeper.
- Origin: Congo River Basin, Central Africa
- Adult Size: ~10–12 cm
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; can nip fins — choose tankmates carefully
- Water Parameters: pH 6.5–7.5 | Temp 24–28°C | Moderate hardness
- Diet: Carnivore — snails, shrimp, bloodworms, clams; hard foods help wear down beak
- Tank Size: Minimum 100L
Best kept in a well-decorated tank with plenty of hiding spots, plants, and open swimming space. Provide a varied diet including hard-shelled foods to keep their ever-growing beak trimmed. A fascinating, interactive fish that will become the centrepiece of any aquarium.
